Bulwell Piggin Antecedents |
![]() |
The Piggin family of Hucknall Torkard and Nottingham, descended from William Piggin of Bulwell * circa 1751 % Elizabeth Marriott 1773 + 1801 March 22 at Bulwell |
|||
---|---|---|---|
Presumably he is the subject of the 1768 apprenticeship of a William Piggen to Joseph Harvey, a butcher of Codnor. The stamp duty paid to Foxton of Nottingham on April 30, 1768 is recorded at IR1 56/154, National Archives and shows he was indentured for seven years from March 28, 1768 at 6 pounds 11 shillings yearly (this pay rate was only a quarter of what grocers' apprentices on the same sheet earned!). He would have been 17 at the time. He would not have been freed from this till March 1775, yet by 1776 it seems he was substantial enough to post a bond for Elen Hodgkinson, 22, of Bulwell, at her marriage to James Walton, innkeeper of Derby (Archdeaconry records). From The Times of 1791 May 4 under the heading Bankrupts quoting the London Gazette of May 3: William Piggin of Bulwell, Nottingham, butcher; to surrender May 16, 17 and June 24, at Eleven, at the Ram Inn, Nottingham. Attorney, Messrs. Kinderley and Long, Symond's Inn, Chancery-lane. | |||
William's origins cannot be established: when he married Elizabeth Marriott in 1773, he stated that he came from Bulwell and was aged 22. The marriage bond (PERFI413, Archdeaconry records at Nottingham University Library) shows him as literate, profession butcher, with John Smith, shopkeeper of Bulwell, as his bondsman, but sheds no further light on his place of birth. There is no record of a William being born in Bulwell or in Heanor parish (of which Codnor was a part) in 1751, so we are left to pick any William Piggin we choose that "half-fits". Tina Negus of Birmingham believes that the right one would be a William born not far away in 1744 in South Wingfield, son of one Joseph Piggin. But the most likely candidate is the William Piggin of Heanor born in 1748: Codnor (above) is a place in Heanor parish. | |||

Note that the descent from William of the man who married in 1831 still needs checking: his fatherhood of the second Henry at right is only conjecture and has not been checked; his fatherhood of Emma Elizabeth seems on time grounds implausible. |
